In recent years, Malaysia has been experiencing a very sharp rise in suicide cases. Two people commit suicide in Malaysia daily.Authorities believe the rate could be higher with many undetermined deaths. According to the National Suicide Registry Malaysia (NSRM) estimation, about 425 people committed suicide between the month of January and August in the year 2010. An average of 60 poeple are taking their lives per month (including undetermined deaths). It is also alarming that more men than women had taken their own lives by a ratio of 3:1.
Malaysia's suicide rate was estimated at 30 per 100,000 people in the year 2011. The general trend points to the 29-39 age group making up the highest number of suicides in Malaysia. According to NSRM- those from the Chinese community topped the numbers with 47.5% of the 328 cases recorded in 2009, followed by Malays (21.3%), Indians (13.4%) and those from Sabah and Sarawak (3.4%)
The above mentioned figure is not conclusive as many deaths have been classified as undertermined deaths. This puts a dent on getting the actual head count for suicide cases. Stigma surrounding suicide incidents, religion, and the Malaysian law are just some reasons why people would rather classify certain family members deaths as undetermined deaths.
